This Post Was Supposed To Be ...

I had intended to go to the Old Bastard's Rally in Delta on Saturday and this blog post was supposed to be filled with photos of vintage bikes and Old Bastards ... but you can see from the video I didn't go any further than the front porch.
   (Looking for the cache.)
So today I went for a walk to complete my first solo Geocache. Now I don't have a hand held GPS so who else could I turn to but Garmin Dan. Technically, when I took him off the mount he became a hand held unit ... and after we resolved how we would accomplish this and more than a little crawling through the bushes off road, and just before giving up - EUREKA. There it was, just where Dan said it would be.
(Dan in the tree with the cache.)
Then I picked the twigs out of my hair, the burs off my pants and walked home ...quite proud of myself! (Thanks Leslie for the tip, aka the coordinates.)
(As seen from the swamp.)

  1. Great pictures. I am glad you didn't have to crawl though the swamp. Bummer you didn't get to the vintage show, but I think you had just as much fun geocaching.

    1. There was a point when the thought crossed my mind that I might need a boat, but then I figured out how to play the game with Dan. I was bummed about the show. I try to get there most years

  2. Yuck, what a terrible Saturday weather wise, although we could use a little rain around here, we've nary a drop since June.
I often wondered about geocaching and using a Garmin, maybe I'll give it a try. And you too have dusted off your bicycle... thanks for the inspiration.

    1. We've had a couple of dandy storms already this September - this one came complete with a heavy rain warning with strong gusts of up to 70 km.
The Garmin worked great once I stopped thinking about roads and distances, zoomed in on the screen and played it like a video game, just trying to move my little arrow (me) closer to the flag. (Watching the on screen tracking of where I'd been walking made me laugh - that's when I clued in, arrow met flag right at the cache.)

Here on the Wet Coast, we don't let a little bit of rain stop us, otherwise we would be held prisoners inside our own home. Life can't stop . . .

I love to walk in the rain wearing my sandals. Just make sure you have a hat and a waterproof shell to keep your clothes dry.

    1. Ya, just a little rain with flash floods, gusts increasing from 20k to 70k each hour and a tornado touch down about 60k away. If it hadn't been for the tornado I might have thought about it - NOT!

  4. Congratulations on the find! Geocaching is a fun activity which the smart phone has made even easier. There is an app that uses your location with the geocaching.org site to show you all of the caches near you. There were quite a few in Joseph but I didn't look in Baker City. We have found quite a few during our road trips and my brother in-law found an underwater cache in the Bahamas.

    1. Richard, my friends in Ottawa are avid cachers, thousands of finds to their name (at least)one every day for 2011 and this weekend they have plans to pick up 65 more but I don't think any under water.) I've gone with them, but this was my first time by myself. I didn't really think I'd find it with Garmin Dan (wish I knew that when I was in Baker city with all that time on my hands.) Now I'll have to download the app (just another thing I don't have to do.)

  5. Looks pretty much like the day we had here on Saturday. Too bad the Old Bastards got rained out - not much fun in that.

    1. Canajun - there was a tornado touch down north of Belleville Saturday too. It rained so hard at one point I couldn't see the outbuildings behind my house - Oh well, gave me an excuse to 'ride' the vacuum!

  6. Karen:

PS: I keep thinking about poor Canajun who was going to the show to see you. I can see him now, soaked to the bone, not realizing you are cozy at home.

  7. Bob - don't worry 'bout Canajun, he'd already stood me up before the weekend began ... but we're bound to meet up sooner or later.

  8. Yay on the cache! I never did find the first one I went searching for. We have massive ticks here, and they scare me. So I usually don't venture into high grasses and crawling places. No ticks up there?

  9. We also have a severe problem with ticks this year (worse than years gone by so I hear) but I always wear long pants, high socks and closed shoes so I don't worry too much about them and so far, so good.

  10. Karen,
Thanks for the timely reminder. Geocaching is popular in our area and the GPS on my bike is actually a hand-held Garmin 76CX. Really must give it a go.
