Every 15 Years Or So …
Every 15 years or so Mother Nature decides we need a kick in the pants. Maybe she just wants to let us know who's in charge, who knows! This year she chose spring to hit us with her best shot and last night she decided to start her ‘hissy fit’ with a “winter” storm in spring.
Wednesday night those in the know started talking about
winter storms with ice pellets and snow. It hadn’t really happened by Thursday, just a
bit of rain (April showers bring May flowers after all) but they still claimed
it was coming. I
thought, really? It’s spring! So, with a final look at the weather radar before
heading to ‘nod’ I figured, they were wrong again and went to sleep,
confident I knew what the world would look like in the morning. What I didn’t
see was a dragon waiting to pounce. Thursday’s rain was just the appetizer.
This morning I (and much of the rest of the province) woke
up to the main course.
It’s nothing compared to the “Great” ice storm of ’98 (we're still talking about that one) but this was my driveway when I got home.
And, if you've been watching my lake ... this is what it looked like today.
This looks quite dangerous but it makes nature looks pretty.
ReplyDeleteSonja, it's the craziest thing - the ice was not adhering to the road surface but it continued to build up layers upon layers on trees, wires, grass and everywhere else all day long.
DeleteWow, what a mess! It looks like you have your work cut out. Have a fun weekend with your chainsaw...
ReplyDeleteAh, Richard, that's the advantage of having a son who loves to play with noisy toys outside. He had the largest branches cut and off the drive before not long after I took the pictures. Unfortunately that was not the only tree that sustained damage though it seemed to be the worst hit.
DeleteWow, you got a lot of ice. We've had some but not enough to bend and break trees. As for lakes, ours still has ice right up to the shoreline, but I wouldn't want to walk out on it as I expect it's pretty rotten. But still, we were ice free about 3 weeks ago last year.
ReplyDeleteCanajun - from weather network reports I thought your area was expecting even worse than what we got. It was crazy - the freezing rain happened in the night, by the morning commute it had turned to rain. The roads were okay, but it just continued to build up on trees and powerlines all day and now, it's gone, 24 hours of ice.
DeleteWhat a difference from last year for sure.
Karen:
ReplyDeleteI love looking at photos of your lake. Not as frozen as it was before but how did you clear your driveway? You couldn't drive in.
I love looking at the ice on your fence
beautiful, you're so lucky

Riding the Wet Coast
Bob, I got a call from my son warning me that I would not be able to get all the way (it's not a km long country lane but it is a few hundred feet long) in the drive. Along the drive two maple trees suffered severe damage as well as one old willow. Some of the branches are still 'hung' up dangerously in the tree. He's gone now to get specialized tools to remove the 'widow makers.'
ReplyDeleteI love the lake too, I walk past it almost every day - wish I lived right beside it, but then I wouldn't get any exercise (ha, ha)
Damn ice storms/freezing rain. Those have to be the worst.
ReplyDeleteWe've had one or two here, not often. I hate having to chisel the car out. Can't get the key in the lock - can't get the door open.
I hope it melts quick for you.
The lake looks pretty.
Trobairitz, it was the sound of ice being chiseled off the first vehicle to leave my house that woke me up ... but now, 24 hours later and it's gone.
DeleteKaren, Your pictures are beautiful. We had a weird weather day here too, sunshine, torrential rain and hail, definitely colder too. But I'm not complaining because we get spring before anyone else in Canada. Hope your weather improves.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures... but then, snow and ice always look so much better in photos... we've only had one ride so far this year - we had more snow in March than we had all winter I think! LOL Hope we're all out on the road soon!
