With my head near the clouds, it felt like flying...

Probably my last day or should I say night on the road so I decided to hotel again and upgraded from Motel 6, splurging on myself with a room at the Day's Inn, Geneva, New York. For $83 (almost double my Motel 6 experience) I get: no orange paint, pictures on the wall, a breakfast in the morning, a big 'boss' chair at a big desk, shampoo and hand lotion, a mini fridge (empty,) a pad of paper and a pen, a lounge chair, massive footstool and a widescreen TV, but more importantly I get preferential motorcycle parking.

While I was out exploring a Harley snuck in beside my Star.
This morning found me and the Star winding through the countryside on local roads, but road after road was closed for construction and the detours became more and more sketchy so I pointed the Star back to interstate 81 for a short time. Determined to take a different route home I turned north to follow the Susquehanna River along highway 15N.

A federal highway, for much of the way, 15 is a four lane that hugs the mountains. Looking down at the tree tops it crosses from mountain to mountain on bridges that are nothing less than engineering marvels. The traffic was light, the weather perfect, winding up and down, travelling at highway speeds with my head near the clouds it felt like flying today. Welcome to the Empire State. At Corning I switched to state highway 414 then to 14 at the tip of Seneca Lake and coasted into Geneva in time to go exploring.
They must have planted a mixed bag of seeds!

The folks in this town are nothing, if not creative. A vegetable canoe garden ... or is it a canoe vegetable garden?

I've passed through the 'Finger Lakes' area before but never stopped. It's a spot to mark down to re-visit or make a destination one day.

  1. Sorry to hear you are cutting your trip short, but day trips sound like a great idea. There is still lots of summer left.

  2. All in - I will have been on the road 20 days - not as many kilometers or days as I had planned but it is really hard to wander aimlessly without a real destination all the while keeping dry. You are so right there are many great roads near home and there is lots of summer left.

  3. Last day on the road! That sounds sad especially when there is still so much summer left.

    1. When a journey ends it is always sad ... but then a new journey must begin!

  4. I so envy you that you have been 20 days Moto wandering! I haven't been able to do a trip up until this point and am itching to take off for even just a few days. I guess though you might feel a little saddle weary after awhile.

    1. Dar ... I think I could go forever, if I had a destination.

  5. Karen:

It seems to me that this year was your shortest trip. I suppose with the bad weather to the South it made more sense to come back to the good weather. I'm feeling a bit sad that you couldn't explore longer

Just found 14 and Geneva on my map. Gentle roads through small towns. Those are the best. Enjoy your last day . . .

    1. Bob, I think you are right - this felt like my shortest trip ever (though I think my first trip out on the Star was about the same.) My last day as a Princess and I got wet just 100 km from home.

  6. I am sure although you have fun wandering, sleeping in your own bed will feel good. And still lots of summer for day trips or overnighters.

Cute little veggie garden. What a cool use of a canoe.

  7. Karen, 20 days on the road is plenty. You're really blessed.
I'd love to get my hands on some of the seed of the bike garden.

    1. Sonja, I am blessed ... blessed to have the opportunity to travel as I have and blessed to have the family and friends I have to come home to. (The bike garden was awesome.)

  8. I'll have to try that route since I plan on a return trip to PA. This past trip I followed NY-97 because I wanted to check out Hawks Nest Rd just outside Port Jervis. The REALLY good spot is so short that I doubt I would make the trek again as part of a PA trip. Glad to see you're back safe and sound and ready to venture off again.

    1. I passed through the Port Jervis area on July 17 heading down 209 to Delaware Water Gap or what I like to call wild life alley.
