Spring Is Here …

Although it doesn't look like it today, spring is here. I’m home now and walking in my own neighborhood. Here there are no Asian vendors hawking their mountains of vegetables, dried shrimp and roasting nuts. There are no carts filled with bok choy and no tall buildings. There are no honking horns, rumbling subway trains and no wailing sirens; the air is not filled with the pungent smells of the fish market. The screaming sounds of the city are far away today as I walk on my peaceful country road and it’s snowing on and off but I know spring is here … I can hear it!
Here I can hear the red winged blackbird’s familiar "Cronk-a-reeeee" from the marshy edge of the still frozen lake; I can hear the crows cawing about the weather. Even the winter birds are trilling out a different song today, and today, I saw my second Robin singing "Cheerily, cheer up, cheer up, cheerily, cheer up!" He's telling me, "the snow will go … spring is here."

Happy Ides of March! The count down begins.

    1. Thanks Coop - And the snow did stop, and the sun did come out ... and it won't be long now.

    2. I love the photo of the robin on the fencepost....he's built about like I am....too bad I can't fly like he does.

    3. Coop it always amazes me how they can arrive looking so plump after expending all that energy to get here - they must have metabolisms like mine.

    I can't help but chuckle. Whistful thinking I'm afraid . . .

  3. Karen,

Lovely pictures! I can just her the birds trilling from your description. Spring isn't that far off for you I hope. We are in full swing spring, but it has been a very wet one so far. Today its really quite chilly too. It's funny in the dog days of summer how we wish for cooler weather and in winter we wish for the dog days of summer.

  4. Almost Spring!!

We can't count on Robins to show us when spring arrives as we have them year round. When we first moved down we chuckled everything we saw a robin in winter and would tell ourselves "it must be spring"

Glad you made it home safe and sound. It is always nice to vacation but even better being home.

  5. Being home is good - I'd be so confused with Robins all year round!

  6. Almost there. Not much of riding weather over here either. Too much of the wet stuff. Today was not too bad though.

  7. Today was bright and sunny here though minus 5C to plus 1. Great for walking ... but the forecast for the next two days- possibility of 14 cm of SNOW - ah, it won't last too long. But still, I don't expect to get the VStar out of storage until mid April (but that's just 4 weeks away :oD

  8. Spring? You still have seasons over there? Wow! We only have European weather over here now and it's pretty constant throughout the 12 months of the year. Grey cloud, drizzly on and off, one expectedly sunny day which gives drought and hose pipe ban then more continous rain. We don't have so much of the old fog anymore though.

    1. Black Inasuma, I would miss the seasons terribly ... but I could be happy if winter was just a bit shorter and spring a bit longer, really I could! We still have lots of fog (all fall ... that's why I'd like spring to last and not so much fall even though I love the colourful, sunfilled fall days!)

  9. An honest to goodness robin, have not seen those yet this year...they do seem to signal that actual spring has arrived in your area...
