City With A Split Peronsality ...

The conference ended at noon today giving me time to wander away from this familiar and scenic little corner of the city surrounding the falls.

It is a city built on the edge of the Niagara River where two separate falls thunder over a precipice; one in Canada and the other in the USA. I walked over the Rainbow Bridge crossing the international border (there was no dotted yellow line down the middle of the river, I was really disappointed.)

Down by the bridge, with my back to the river, I found a totally different city. Niagara Falls is truly a city with a split personality. At one end it is a place built around the natural beauty of the falls with miles of parklands honouring nature. On the other end it's a horror of crass commercial, touristic, casino filled, money grabbing, ugly crap that is Clifton Hill. (But that's just my opinion.)

P.S. This was 9 pm.

... and so was this (three weeks ago snow, today a high of 33C, still 27C after dark.

  2. Really enjoyed the panoramic view of the familiar-to-me area surrounding the falls, brings back many good memories. Like most I'd guess, I've spent far more time on the Canadian side of the mist.

    1. I didn't actually set foot on American soil either ... technically I walked across the border and I needed my passport to return to Canada but I didn't go through Customs on the US side - barely made it off the bridge before turning around. I know, kind of had the Canadian Customs agent confused too. I just wanted to say, "I walked across the border."

  3. I think most cities have their own Jeckyl and Hyde.

I really like the stone bridge picture. Such a pretty setting.

    1. So true! The area of the city near the falls, under 'parks' control is beautiful ... the rest ...an amusement park. I expect I didn't see any of where the 'real' city was but I had fun.

  4. Very touristy, but I liked it every time. Never went to visit the US part of the Falls though.
