Around and About

The count down has begun, only 3 more days and I am back to work. I have been fortunate lately to have time to spend hiking, riding and biking around and about home. It has made the last few days feel like I'm still on holiday and is there any better feeling? A couple of days ago I hiked at Charleston Lake then I had a couple hours to spare yesterday and managed to do a 200+ km ride on the VStar in perfect weather along a favorite local road to Perth Ontario. The traffic was heavy (last minute holiday sight see-ers) and I've photographed the ride so many times, I didn't stop except for gas and lunch. Today a friend convinced me to dust off the bicycle and I rode the two-wheeler (and survived) 17km along a stretch of newly opened trail between Orser Road and Harrowsmith Ontario. Around and about the home town - the new 200k holiday!

at least you have a bright sunny weekend to enjoy. You get much more vacation time than most so we are still envious . . .

I too was thinking of dusting off my pedal bicycle

    1. I know Bob - I am very lucky (it's the Diva in me that needs to complain about something!)
The first 2 k peddling were the hardest then my legs seemed to give up complaining and just went along for the ride. I was, however, very glad the last 7 k was mostly downhill 'cause by then it was another part of my anatomy doing the complaining!) My neck and wrists got stiff too - that must be how sport bike riders feel (sans butt issues) at the end of the day.

  2. This other bike is missing something, uhm... a motor? As for the soreness, I guess that comes eventually with any two-wheeled vehicle.

    Wishing a nice long weekend.

    1. I wonder if there is some way to hide a motor on that thing ... and still look energetic?

  3. Looks like a great day for a pedal bike ride. Mine is still hanging in the garage. The damn beach cruiser doesn't like head winds or hills as it only has three speeds. Oh wait, maybe that is me, not the bike.

    1. I hear you - it's a whole different muscle group - I hate hills, unless they are down hills. The hardest part was the first 2k and then the last 15k ... oh, wait a minute, that was the whole ride.

  4. Do you still look forward to the start of the school year? Nice to get out on the other two-wheeler (the one that runs on pie!). I never got mine out this summer though, I guess there is still time.

    1. Can't stop laughing Richard - I wonder how many kilometers to the pie I get (not too many according to the scale!)
I do still look forward to a new school year; the smell of fresh crayons, the sight of shiny floors and the sounds of little children full of excitment and stories to tell ... but at the same time I had so much fun this summer I'm sad as well.

    2. According to one of the well known formulas, I'm sorry to report that it is about 26km/slice (1/6th of a pie) on level ground traveling about 25km/hr. Bicycles are a pretty efficient way to travel...

    3. Am so sad to hear that all that work burns so little pie. It really depends on your deffinition of efficient.

  5. I too have been living in denial about holidays being almost over. Sigh last day. Unfortunately I didn't log the miles I had hoped or done a long distance ride during my vacation - pouting about this. Next year I am going to make some sort of trip come hell or high water.

    Beautiful pictures!

    1. I haven't logged as many k's as I would have liked either - but the season isn't over yet and I'm still hopeful. We have some beautiful September and October rides to do here in Ontario.
It's a great way to travel and you've got all winter to plan where that hell or high water trip might be. So many places to go - so many things to see!

I was waiting for you to plan your trip over here. I know you mentioned it. If it is not too cold, how about Campbell River during October ? Thanksgiving break week ? I am in the thinking stage, and then check the weather forecast a few days ahead before I make my decision

I wished I had a bike at your place, I would fly in and join up with you, then it would already be there for next season

Yep, it's winding down fast but there's still lots of time to get out and about and enjoy what's predicted to be a long, warm fall. Yahoo!

Off topic - as it turns out I have other obligations this weekend so won't be able to get to the Old Bastards Rally. Will have to try again next year.

  7. Canajun - Am really hoping there is lots of time left, I love the fall. This weekend and the Old Bastards Rally, well, the weather doesn't seem to be shining their way. With the weather warnings from environment Canada not sure if I will make it myself. Catch you on the flip side.
