This week's forecast called for near record high temps, nasty humidex
readings and thunderstorms by Tuesday and/or Wednesday … just not the
kind of weather that encouraged me to pull out the gear and ride the Star to the Capital
area. (What the heck - I took the
Tuscon.)
Where, on one of the hottest days of the summer my friends had planned a lovely hike in Gatineau Park ...
(Brandy, look what I found at the Champlain look out! Sadly I noticed the rider was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt.)
We also stopped at the Pont Brabant-Philippe for a little geo-caching fun. (This bridge was finished in 2015 and replaced the original covered bridge crossing the White River destroyed by arson.)
Day two of my Sojourn to the Capital, the humidex hit 40⁰C. The air was oppressive ... I love mother nature but it was time for some urban hiking at a few of our favorite air-conditioned locations. (Thanks to Google for the photo.)
For a second I thought you rode to Washington, and I thought you had resolved to fight fire with more fire. :)
ReplyDeleteDavid, there's enough comic relief coming from Ottawa, Canadians don't need DC any more. That being said, we were going to skip down to the hill but it was too dam hot so we headed for the hills instead.
DeleteGood thing you brought the Tucson. The results of any trip to "the biggest Ikea in the world" - or something - would ever be portable on a Star. :)
ReplyDeleteI think your right Canajun ... but where there's a will, there's usually a way (or a return trip with the SUV!)
DeleteHope you didn't get lost during the interior hike or did you stick to the trail?
ReplyDeleteNice photos especially the bridge.
I did get lost a couple of times - that's what happens when a squirrel moment draws you from the path. But I managed to find my way back to the well marked trail and made it out safe and sound.
DeleteVery cool. Other Gladius do exist. And a covered bridge too.
ReplyDeleteAhh Ikea, a good way to spend a grew hours in the A/C. Portland has just broken the record for the most days above 90˚F. Old record was 2009.
Three floors and near 7 km later (according to my viafit) - Ikea was a great place to hike in climate controlled comfort. (When we added the next shopping mall we totaled nearly 12k mall mileage.)
DeleteDo you have the same taste in furniture than me or are you just headed there for the A/C and the meatballs? I was under the impression that summer is almost over in your neck of the woods, and now you're getting 40°C? Wow! Didn't you tell me to bring heated gear? Looks like I need a bathing suit and sunscreen instead ;-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bridge! Lovely view. I'd like to visit these spots. Did they get the arsonist?
Sonja, the weather is totally unpredictable. This seems to be a blip with a cold front heading in that should bring more seasonable temperatures soon, but then that could change tomorrow.
DeleteMeatballs - heck we go for the $1 full breakfast. We were able to carry out what we bought, (this time) but that's because I had to go back home to take some measurements! And the air didn't deter us at all.
Not sure how the size of our Ikea compares with others though it's adjacent to the Mall of America so I doubt it's the smallest one. As the only one in the family that hasn't been there one of these days it will no doubt happen. From what I hear, not a bad place to spend a hot afternoon though.
ReplyDeleteWarm and stormy here this evening, almost cold tomorrow as the front moves through. Doing our best to soak up whatever heat we can.....all too soon things will change.
Lovely bridge! Motorized traffic allowed?
Coop - I just had to Google big Ikeas and found this funny blooger posting about it. (http://ottawarickshaws.ca/a-huge-injustice-montreal-ikea-to-oust-ottawas-as-largest-in-north-america) You will have to try Urban hiking - great way to cool down.
DeleteThe bridge does not allow motorized traffic at this time.
Lovely pics.Looks like a nice ride--even with the heat/humidity. Tee shirt and shorts? Saw a lot of this recently.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how many riders ride in shorts and t-shirts.
