In Search Of Colour

An absolutely stunning Sunday called to me,” Go for a ride.” So despite the clinging cold I set off in search of colour. Late as usual I headed north to meet up with Ron in Havelock (167km from home.) No time to stop for photos when you’re running 30 minutes late ... "Never mind," I thought, "I’ll come back this way, the trees will still be there."

Well, I’ve learned, you can never go back. Those stunning scenes I saw in the morning light were near impossible to find in the fading afternoon shadows. I tried – God I tried. Several U turns later, "Nope that wasn’t that spot." Oh, how the light changes everything.

But it was a beautiful ride and I didn't go home without at least a few autumn pictures and one friendly wave from a Harley riding OPP officer – I didn’t get his picture either.
472+/- kilometers, stunning autumn colours and "Mommy, I still have a cold!"

  2. Very nice colors. And you're right, you can't go back, you've got to shoot the picture when you see it...

    1. If I only knew then what I know now (ha ha) and if my friend Ron would only join the 21st century and own a cell phone I might be able to text and say, "Needed to stop for a picture, will be 30 minutes late!"

    1. Funny how the colours here were not as vivid as an hour north and past that they were past their prime. But today, I think we hit peak here suddenly - just in time for the rain to drop them all.

  4. Yep, I've learned that particular lesson as well. Take the picture now, not later, the light will be different.

Still, some nice pics. 472km, nice long ride.

    1. Thanks Dom, it was such a glorious day ... would have loved to have gone so much further if I had been feeling well. As it was I needed a long nap at the end of the day ... a nap that lasted until Monday morning.

  5. You may not have got the pics you wanted in the morning, but the colors of the ones you did take are beautiful.

Makes me want to get out and search for color too. Sometimes hard to do with the conifer forests around here. Most color seems to be in the city.

    1. Trobiritz ... don't you find even the coniferous trees change over the season. Around here the evergreens are so fresh and bright in the spring and gradually change to a deep rich hue by fall. Okay so they don't have the glory of red and orange and gold but ....any excuse for a fall ride when the weather is fine right?

  6. I'm sure we’re all guilty of “I’ll snap it on the return trip” thinking, even when not deadline riding. Likely it has something to do with that “a body in motion tends to stay in motion” thing. I just find it hard to stop when the throttle’s turned, the wheels are turning, and the road is passing beneath—even when beforehand I’ve admonished myself, “Damn it, Ry, when you have a passing thought that something would make a nice photo, stop. Just stop. You won’t have another chance”… I have yet to learn the lesson, to obey my own discipline.

I’m with the others here: You might think you missed some chances, but you still ended up with lovely shots of fall.

    1. Ry, I hear you! Every time I go out I say to myself ... stop to take pictures and every time the wheels get going I forget to stop or don't want to stop or something ... Why can't we stop?

  7. I can only imagine how the pics might have looked like in the morning light but the ones you captured are nevertheless stunningly beautiful. Thanks for stopping on your way back ;-)

    1. Sonja the morning was full of sights that sang Ontario's autumn ... they were stunning: rocks, water, reflections. Indescribable.

  8. Looks like some great color! I've missed shots that way as well, or, there was not a safe place to pull over. I try to jot them down in my journal when I stop, to have ideas for the next run..

    1. Next time ... the colours have just hit their peak this weekend here but sadly the "S" word is in the forecast.

  9. Karen, common themes here....."should have stopped then"....the almost too fast leaf color to peak brilliance.....friends without communication.......

You were out and have good reasons to go back :)

To follow Brandy's comment, I've noticed and been reminded this week that rural isn't required for color beauty.

Last but definitely not least, hope she's feeling better!

    1. Coop so right ... the colour of fall creeps into every corner of our universe, town and country and it's beautiful. So, why don't they carry a cell phone, even if just for emergencies like these!
(Hopefully, with heavy duty antibiotics, now, finally, would have been sooner if she weren't so pig headed, she will be feeling better soon! Thanks for asking.)
